BEFORE YOU SPEND TIME APPLYING

Check the details that matter.

  • Testing focus: separate manual, API, mobile, performance and browser automation responsibilities.
  • Programming requirements: check the actual language and coding expectations, especially for SDET titles.
  • Tools: distinguish essential tools from preferred ones and demonstrate transferable testing principles.
  • Experience and domain: read requirements for payments, healthcare or other specialist systems carefully.
  • Work arrangement: verify office location, remote eligibility, shifts and release-support expectations.
MAKE THE NEXT STEP PRACTICAL

A focused application plan.

  1. Test one small application manually

Document the main user journeys, risks, expected behaviour and test data. Include invalid inputs and boundary conditions, not only successful cases.

  2. Write useful defect reports

For each genuine issue, record the environment, minimal reproduction steps, expected and actual results, and supporting evidence. Avoid inventing defects to fill a portfolio.

  3. Automate a stable subset

Choose a few important checks, keep them independent and add clear assertions. Document setup and known limitations. Expand only after the basic suite is reliable.

  4. Map evidence to each application

Link the relevant test work and explain what you tested and why. If a required skill is missing, name a practical learning step instead of claiming it on your résumé.

CLEAR ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between QA automation and SDET?

Titles vary. Automation roles often focus on implementing and maintaining tests; SDET openings may expect deeper coding, tooling and test architecture. Assess the actual responsibilities and interview expectations.

Do I need coding for manual testing jobs?

The requirement depends on the opening. Manual testing can focus on analysis and defect reporting, while API, SQL or scripting may still be requested. Automation and SDET roles commonly ask for programming skills.

Is ISTQB certification mandatory for QA jobs in India?

There is no single requirement across employers. Check each opening. The syllabus can structure your study, while a portfolio shows how you apply testing concepts.
