Eastern Washington Women’s Tennis participated in the Gonzaga Invitational this past weekend and put on several strong performances against numerous opponents from the Big Sky Schools.
“We had a great weekend at Gonzaga Invite. I was really impressed with how our doubles game progressed,” the head coach said. Dustin Hinson said. “We played smart and aggressively at the right time and won six out of seven doubles matches all weekend. We also put in some impressive performances in the singles. The whole team played with the drive and intensity that make the difference in the critical moments of matches. Scout Mathews played his first tournament of the fall and won some great matches in the singles elite. She played with intensity, concentration and bet on her strengths to win great victories. We look forward to our last tournament of the fall in a few weeks at San Diego State.”
taylor andersen and Scout Mathews would team up and beat Maria Goheen and Olivia Ossterbaan of Montana 6-2 to open their doubles competition. The two Eagles would then knock out Idaho’s Jayanne Palma and Selin Sepken 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. Andersen and Mathews would fall in the next round to Gonzaga’s Kianna Oda and Caroline Wernli.
Isabelle Foshee and Léandra Nizetic combined to defeat Madison Egan and Nell Arendt of Portland State 6-0. The pair withdrew from the next round due to injury.
Kenzington Mann and Renata Gabouyan defeated Maria Villarejo and Elizabeth Strongina in the open doubles group, with a 7-5 victory.
In Saturday’s extra doubles, Nizetic and Sara Vasic passed Rose Hayes and Maria Frampton of Gonzaga. Mann and Gabuzyan would battle for a 7-5 victory over Villarejo and Nancy Cabanas of Montana State and Montana respectively.
On the final day of competition, Sunday’s extra round in doubles, Mann and Gabuzyan beat Egan and Arendt 6-4. Vasic and Nizetic would beat Nicole Horacek and Saffron Dowse of Idaho 6-2.
Scout Mathews returned to the field and won two consolation singles matches. She started against Olivia Oosterbaan of Montana, winning 7seven-55, 5-7(10-8). Mathews then beat Rachell Starreveld of Idaho 6-4, 6-4.
Kenzington Mann picked up a win in her first singles match, beating Maria Villarejo of Montana State, 4-6, 7seven-616-2.
After earning a bye in the first round, taylor andersen defeated Ivayla Mitkova of Montana, 6-3, 6-4. Andersen would fall in his next game.
Isabelle Foshee would advance to the consolation quarterfinals, beating Portland State’s Nika Beukers 6-3, 6-2.
Eastern Washington will wrap up its fall roster on Friday, Nov. 11 at the San Diego State Classic. The competition ends on Sunday, November 13.
