SAN ANTONIO — Tarleton’s 2022-23 fall campaign went from good to great last weekend, with the women’s tennis team taking three steals and winning the majority of its other matches.

The Texans brought all nine players to San Antonio for the UIW Cardinal Classic on Friday-Sunday, with a combined record of 16-9 in singles and 6-4 in doubles. Celia Vaudiau won the singles D tie after a 3-0 scoreline, Clara Sobius won the singles F flight after a 3-0 scoreline, and the duo of Elsa Drink and Ximena Morales won the double B tie thanks to a 3-0 weekend.

Tarleton not only had to battle the competition, but they also had to battle the weather. Rain delayed the start of the tournament and upended much of the event, but that didn’t shake the Texans, who competed alongside UIW, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, North Texas, Angelo State and other WAC members UTRGV and New Mexico. Seven of Tarleton’s nine players posted singles winning records over the weekend, led by unblemished 3-0 marks from Vaudiau and Sobius. Vaudiau defeated Esther Bowers of Angelo State 6-0 6-1, Kristyna Mamicova of UTRGV 6-0 6-1 and Miranda Bishard of New Mexico State 6-1 6-1. Sobius beat Angelo State’s Mieke Van Deventer 6-2 6-4, New Mexico State’s Dora Kurdi 6-3 7-6(8) and Angelo State’s Letizia Corsini 6-3 6-4.

Martha Makantasi competed as Tarleton’s No. 1 player in the tournament and went 2-1, with wins over New Mexico State’s Anna Pinaieva 7-5 7-6(3) and Sofia Franco Salcedo of l ‘UIW 3-6 6-3 [10-7]. Boisson and Morales, who went 3-0 in doubles, each went 2-1 in singles. Drink defeated UIW’s Gargi Pawar 6-7(5) 7-6(1) [10-8] and Angelo State’s Eva Schwartz 6-3 4-6 [11-9] in singles C. Laure Razet and Audrey Pacheco also posted 2-1 singles records over the weekend. Razet competed in E singles, like Morales, and beat UTRGV’s Stefanie Wilske 6-1 6-1 and Angelo State’s Ayda Guler 7-5 6-2. Pacheco competed in singles F, the draw won by Sobius, beating Sofia De Leon of UTRGV 6-1 7-6(4) and Van Deventer of Angelo State 6-4 4-6 [16-14].

Emma Persson and Elif Albayrak each picked up a singles win, with Persson beating Pawar of UIW 7-6(3) 6-1 in singles B, and Albayrak beating Palina Saulevich of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-6 6 -4 [10-6] in single C.

In doubles, Boisson and Morales won Vol B beating Bella Nguyen-Melissa Cartis of New Mexico State 6-1, Dianela Rodriguez-Alexandra Visnevskaya of Angelo State 6-3 and Guler-Irrinki of Angelo State 6-0.

Vaudiau and Persson were also in Double B, going 2-1 with wins over UTRGV’s Marjorie Souza-Yaiza Vazquez and UTRGV’s Valentina Urraco-Mamicova. Makantasi and Albayrak played together, earning a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Sofia Pinto/-Kateryna Rublevska 6-4.

Tarleton has another fall tournament scheduled for this weekend in El Paso during the Friday-Sunday UTEP Invitational.
