Men’s tennis wins both ITA regional titles | Tech Rasta


MADISON, NJ — For the first time in school history, student-athletes from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s tennis team won the singles and doubles championships at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. (ITA) Northeast Regional with sophomore Aiden Drover-Mattinen to be crowned twice. First-year student Andy Zhu partnered with Drover-Mattinen in doubles.

Sunday’s action began with the singles semifinals, which included two from RPI. Joining Drover-Mattinen in the last four was senior Abraham Yohannes, who lost a close match in three sets 7-6 (11-9), 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) against Nico Tenyie of New Jersey City. Drover-Mattinen, who won her semi-final 6-4, 6-0, came back from a set down to defeat Tenyie 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The doubles final featured the RPI duo against Liberty League foes Sean Pesin and Hobart College’s Jett Wright with the Engineers prevailing in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Drover-Mattinen and Zhu will continue their fall seasons in the ITA National Cup, which they qualified by reaching the final. This tournament takes place in mid-October in Georgia.
